A new 15 bed specialist mental health unit within the Mason Clinic has been officially opened in Auckland today.

The $14.4 million Te Aka unit, opened by Minister of Health Jonathan Coleman, takes the unit’s total bed capacity to 108.  The new unit includes sensory modulation rooms, a gym, international courtyards and natural light.  The Mason Clinic provides services regionally and a national level for people with forensic mental health or intellectual disability issues who have committed criminal offences or are at high risk in the community. The new unit is part of other redevelopment projects at the Clinic, operated by Waitemata DHB, which have included a rebuild of the Te Miro Maori and Pacific Nations resource centre, the Kauri medium secure unit remediation project and the improvements to the Tane Whakapiripiri and Pohutukawa units.
