Self marketing

If you are looking to change roles/positions don’t forget that everything you do as part of this process tells prospective employers something about you!

From your initial phone enquiry or your covering letter and CV, they are forming a picture of what you have to offer and how that ‘fits’ with what they are looking for.

Before you start putting together your application, take time to critique the advertisement and the job description, then look for background information on the organisation or area you are hoping to join e.g. their values.

Now you are ready to put together your covering letter, CV or application form in a way that links what you know about yourself and have to offer with the specifics of what they are looking for. Using the same covering letter and CV for all your applications just doesn’t work… by customising them to a particular position you are able to market yourself and highlight why they should choose you over other applicants!
